Shu Chien, Institute of Engineering in Medicine, Univ. of California, San Diego (USA);Shu Chien, MD PhDis a Member of National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine, a Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as President of the Biomedical Engineering Society The International Society of Biorheology, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and Federation of Experimental Societies of Experimental Biology. He is a University Professor of Bioengineering & Medicine, University of California, Director, Bioengineering Institute of California, University of California System-wide, Director, Institute of Engineering in Medicine at UC San Diego, an Honorary Professor of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Professor Chien’s research interests have focused on effects of mechanical forces on gene experssion and signal transduction, integrative and systems physiology, molecular, cellular and tissue bioengineering, biomechanical properties and molecular organization of cell membranes, and blood rheology and microcirculatory dynamics in health and disease. He has received many honors and awards for his remarkable contributions, such as NAE Founders Award, Pierre Galletti Award, Asian American Engineer of the Year, Melville Medals, Poiseuille Medal, Phi Beta Tau Professor of the Year, etc.
